Als Prince vor zweieinhalb Jahren, am 21. April 2016 verstarb, hatte er eine Woche zuvor seine „Piano & A Microphone“-Tour beendet. Die Tour war etwas besonderes, denn niemals zuvor war Prince solo und nur am Klavier unterwegs.
Mit „Piano And A Microphone 1983“ wurde gestern das erste posthume Album aus dem Nachlass von Prince veröffentlicht. Auch hier sitzt Prince nur am Klavier. Die Aufnahme ist eine intime Piano Session aus dem Jahr 1983, also ein Jahr vor der Veröffentlichung von „Purple Rain“, dem Album das Pitchfork erst kürzlich zum besten Album der Achtziger kürte und ein Jahr bevor Prince endgültig zum weltweiten Superstar wurde, der er bis zu seinem Tod blieb.
So nah war man Prince noch nie
Die Aufnahme aus seinem Heimatstudio am Kiowa Trail in Minnesota zirkulierte bei den Hardcore Fans schon vor vielen Jahren als das „Purple House“-Bootleg und wurde Michael Howe, der Prince persönlich kannte und nun im Auftrag vom Nachlassverwalter dem sogenannten Prince Estate dessen Musikarchiv aka The Vault durchforstet, gezielt ausgesucht, wie er Vulture erzählt.
When you come across a tape like Piano & a Microphone, what“™s the process for verifying it“™s from 1983?
There are a couple ways we determine it. A lot of the things in the vault have very specific notes or distinguishing characteristics that date them within a couple of months. Or we can identify Prince“™s writing, the engineer“™s writing, or the kind of tape stock that was used. There are a many number of ways to narrow things down if we“™re unsure. Also the material that“™s being performed and the creative state that“™s in, in some cases, gives us a pretty good idea about things that are less clearly marked. In the case of Piano & a Mic, this recording has floated around in the bootleg and collector community for a number of years, albeit in a very substandard audio quality. I was aware of it and found the performance so captivating.So one of the first things I attempted to do when taking the job was to see if we could locate the master recording, which I assumed was on cassette because of the era and sonic characteristics of it. So we did a bit of detective work and were able to narrow a wide pool of candidates. We spotted this one that had Prince“™s handwriting on the label on side B and it said „Cold Coffee & Cocaine“ and „Why the Butterflies,“ which are the final two songs of the recordings. We were pretty sure we had it. Once we analyzed it, inserted it into the machine, and digitized it, we were fortunately correct.
Die 35 Minuten sind die intimsten Aufnahmen, die jemals von Prince offiziell veröffentlicht wurden, und zu Lebzeiten hätte sich der Künstler sicherlich nicht dazu entschieden sie zu veröffentlichen. Prince sitzt am Klavier und spielt, improvisiert, beatboxt, covert Songs, die noch nicht fertig sind, die erst Jahre später oder nie veröffentlicht werden. Er denkt laut nach und gibt Anweisungen. »Ist das mein Echo?«, fragt er jemanden im Raum (möglicherweise Toningenieur Don Batts, man weiß es nicht), und »Kannst du das Licht etwas abdunkeln?« Und dann legt er los. Aufgenommen wurde die Akustik-Session mit einem gewöhnlichen Kassenrekorder, dennoch klingt die Veröffentlichung großartig.

Wer sich auf das Album einlässt, dürfte Prince so nah sein wie nie zuvor. Einfach nur Prince, ein Klavier und ein Mikrofon. Fans, die diese Seite von Prince noch nicht kannten, dürften ihn nach dieser Platte nur noch mehr verehren und die Hardcore Fans dürften die oder andere Träne verdrücken, so schön ist das Album.

Prince The messaging in this video links thematically to Prince“™s past activist work in Baltimore in 2015 and the resulting riots that ensued in the city and beyond. That year, Prince released a protest song titled „Baltimore“ – along with an accompanying documentary style video – directed squarely at the need for more compassion and peace, an ever-present theme he echoed through his career. The „Baltimore“ video ends with the above quote, which Prince delivered during an impassioned speech at his 2015 Rally 4 Peace concert. This video begins with that same quote, a symbolic reminder underscoring Prince“™s earlier messaging and a timely reflection on the need for positive change. Directed by filmmaker, Salomon Ligthelm through Stink Films, and shot in New York City, the video pays tribute to the scores of teens and children affected by gun-related violence every year in the USA.
