Aus einem geplanten Mexiko Gig von The Whitest Boy Alive entstand durch den Covid-Lockdown das Album „Quarantine at El Ganzo“ von Erlend Øye und Sebastian Maschat mit der Unterstützung lokaler Musiker in San Jose del Cabo im abgelegenen mexikanischen Bundesstaat Baja California Sur (hier geht’s zum Album).
Für das Musikvideo zu „Quarantime“ haben die beiden mehr als 880 Videos von ihren Fans erhalten, die ihre persönliche Erfahrung mit der Quarantäne zeigen.
Hey guys, this is Erlend speaking:
From middle of March to beginning of July I was in Baja California Sur at a closed down hotel in a village called Playita. Going home to Italy was complicated and instead, I encountered incredible hospitality in Mexico, making staying the safer and nicer option.
We were 4 people in my “quarantine family”, Sebastian, Jorge, Clara, and me (Erlend). We rented a kitchen in a house nearby the hotel so we could feel more normal and cook our own meals.
We worked a lot! On music, videos, and painting. On Sundays we drove around and looked at the landscape, blissfully unaware if we really were allowed to, watching nature reclaiming its land and seeing so many animals now that the humans were gone. It was a special time and a wonderful time.
The song “Quarantime” is about that, but also thinking about friends back home and empathizing with their experience.
